Urinary incontinence

Causes of urinary incontinence Urinary incontinence occurs when the normal process of passing urine is interrupted. This can happen for a number of different reasons, which in most cases are related to the different types of urinary incontinence.

The two main types of urinary incontinence are stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

  • Stress incontinence occurs when the pelvic floor muscles are too weak to prevent urination.
  • Urge incontinence is thought to occur as a result of incorrect signals being sent between the brain and the bladder.

These two types of urinary incontinence are thought to be responsible for up to 90% of all cases of the condition according to the National Health Service. It is also possible to have a mixture of both stress and urge urinary incontinence.

The symptoms of urinary incontinence are a loss of bladder control that will cause you to pass urine when you do not mean to. When and how this happens varies depending on the type of urinary incontinence that you have.
